2008 Graduation Celebration Dinner

Foster Youth Make Graduation Goal

The teens who lined up to take "graduation" photos Thursday night at Marina Village in Mission Bay accomplished something huge. Most didn't attend the celebration with parents or siblings, but with social workers and caregivers.

Jasmine Orozco graduated from Palomar High School, just two weeks after giving birth to baby boy Aiden. She met Aiden's father three years ago while living in a group home, and got kicked out of her ninth high school while pregnant, because it didn't have a parenting program.

"I'm very surprised that I graduated," says Orozco.

"Ten years ago, our graduation rate for foster kids was 51 percent," says Chairman Greg Cox, from the County's Board of Supervisors. Cox says last June, the graduation numbers were greater than 83 percent.

"Anything we can do to give [foster youth] a leg up, some assistance, to make sure that they're going to have a chance at being successful in life is really important."
